What four things must HR leaders do to put a dent in the universe? (November 2025)

In 2026, we will no doubt continue to hear that to be taken seriously, HR must be simultaneously strategic and operational, control costs and invest in a people-centred culture, as well as acting as the compliance police who somehow inspire others to feel empowered.

In today's contradictory world of work, HR leaders can be forgiven for wondering if overnight credibility comes from anyone with a ChatGPT subscription, and a comfy armchair.

So here are the four (just four!) things a HR leader needs to do well.

1, Set the right example yourself. "Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It's the only thing" 

2, Seek to understand what employees think and feel. "Treat employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers"  Wiki | Steven Covey 

3, Give up control. "Leaders are those who empower others"

4, Influence the behaviour of others with data. "If you torture the data, it will confess to anything
